Tagalog Prepositions (Pang-ukol)

Tagalog Prepositions (Pang-ukol) are not as meticulously studied in Filipino subjects as prepositions are so done in English grammar studies. Or if they are native speakers of Filipino, students take these lessons in pang-ukolfor granted.

But for Filipinos studying English (not always as a second language, but as required in their course curriculum), prepositions are difficult to learn because these are not obvious in the native language (Tagalog, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Cebuano). Students always find it a challenge to choose which English preposition to use in their composition. (In? On? At? In Filipino or Tagalog these all translate to sa/ng.) Sometimes, finding the exact preposition is more difficult than deciding on an English term or vocabulary.

Some pang-ukol (prepositions?) seem to act as mere noun markers, but their function is to be part of a prepositional phrase.

Below is list of pang-ukol borrowed from Makabagong Balarilang Filipino by Santiago and Tiongco, page 226. Examples that follow of how these are used in prepositional phrases are random suggestions.
